I absolutely understand the double bind of caring so much about our baby’s emotional and physical well being and being willing to do anything to make sure we take good care of them, while also being completely out of our mind with lack of sleep and endless waking through the night and/or stressful and often short nap times.
You may have already done a lot of research and asked for help from professionals but I know that when I went through this process, nothing I was told really felt right to me.
One nurse told me to give my baby no eye contact and to look at my phone while I rocked the cot from side to side really fast. This made absolutely no sense to me at all. How could I turn away from my baby?
Another professional told me to stand with my feet apart holding my baby in the sling of my arm while I swayed him from side to side (also fast). This was so exhausting for me and he would wake again when I put him into his cot.
Of course I also knew about sleeping training methods and was 100 percent certain I was not going to do that either.
I was psycotherapy trained and I knew the importance of staying with my baby when he was distressed and I was simply not willing to leave him alone at all. I knew how much he needed me to be present in order to feel safe and securely attached.
And at the same time I was going so crazy with desperation to get sleep and I didn’t know what to do.
So when I finally discovered and refined this approach I was so relieved. I knew that it felt absolutely right. So right that I couldn’t believe I had not been given this information from any of the professionals I had seen up to this point.
So now when I explain this approach to mothers, many look at me as if a light bulb has just been turned on.
“ Why hasn’t any one told me about this before”.
“Everything about this makes sense”.
Finally an approach to helping our baby that meets our need to provide warm, loving connection with our child PLUS helping them get the sleep they need and in turn helping us get the sleep we need to be able to enjoy our life as a mum.
